One of them, our Lead iOS Developer, Aline Borges, recently took the international stage at mDevCamp in Prague to share how she’s pushing the boundaries of mobile security in the real world.

From Brazil to Prague: Aline Takes the Stage

mDevCamp is one of Europe’s top mobile development conferences, gathering the world’s best engineers and innovators. Aline was invited to speak about mutual TLS (mTLS)—a key component in making Harbor’s communication between app and camera exceptionally secure.

What is mTLS?: Mutual TLS (mTLS) is a security protocol that ensures both parties in a digital conversation (like your Harbor Mobile App and your Harbor Camera) can verify each other’s identity before any data is shared. Unlike standard TLS, which only verifies the server, mTLS adds a second layer of protection by requiring the your App to authenticate itself too. This creates an encrypted, trusted connection that keeps your data private and your system safe from unauthorized access. In short, it’s one of the most secure ways to communicate online, and it's a big reason Harbor stands apart from other baby monitors.

In her talk, "Implementing mTLS in iOS: Challenges, Lessons, and Real-World Wins", Aline unpacked what mTLS is, why it matters, and how Harbor uses it to ensure that only your Harbor Mobile App can talk to your Harbor Camera. It’s the kind of encryption and identity verification typically reserved for banking apps or enterprise software, and it’s built right into Harbor.

But as Aline explained, implementing mTLS in iOS is far from straightforward. With limited documentation and a host of platform-level challenges, it required creativity, persistence, and deep technical insight.

“I had to figure out so much from scratch,” Aline said. “But if my work helps other developers raise their security standards, it’s worth it.”
