If it seems like anything and everything can affect baby’s sleep at night, that’s because it kind of does… Case in point: diapers. While frequently overlooked, quality diapers that are comfortable and fit baby well will allow them to sleep more soundly at night (and also reduce leaks!).

We spoke with Amrita Saigal, founder of Kudos Diapers and a material science engineer, to learn more about what to look for in a diaper.

Meet Kudos

Launched in 2021 after three years in development, Kudos Diapers makes the first disposable diaper lined with cotton and wipes made from compostable, wood-based fibers. Kudos is designed not only with baby’s comfort in mind, but also yours. With their patent-pending DoubleDry™ tech, which offers twice as many absorption layers, baby stays dry (and fast asleep) all night long.

Kudos is plastic- and bamboo-free, with no chlorine, latex, and added fragrance. Put simply, it’s a diaper you can feel good about using—and which feels good for your little one.

Three questions with Kudos Diapers founder Amrita Saigal

Q: How did Kudos come to be?

A: It was after I learned that most disposable diapers are lined with plastic! As an MIT-trained material scientist and mom, I set out to create a safer, truly reliable diaper using 100% cotton liners instead. Cotton is not only better for the environment, but also the best, doctor-recommended material for babies dealing with rashes and eczema.

Q: Talk to us about the relationship between diapers and sleep…

A: What touches your baby’s skin matters, especially at night. The plastic and processed materials in most diapers and wipes can actually increase your chances of developing rashes and eczema, which makes baby fussy and uncomfortable (and keeps you up at night).

The challenge is that most natural diapers on the market aren’t truly leak-resistant, especially overnight. That was one of our biggest challenges at Kudos, and we’re excited to have developed award-winning technology that uses twice as many absorption layers to keep baby dry, comfortable, and asleep at night.

Q: What are the top diapering mistakes parents might be making that can affect sleep?

One, fold the diaper leg cuffs out to minimize gaps and leaks!

Two, sizing is key. A bigger diaper will give you more absorbency, and I’ll often recommend that parents size up—especially at night—if their little one is between sizes.

Three, pay attention to what’s touching baby’s skin. You’d be surprised by how many diapers, wipes, and lotions have added fragrances, which can be super irritating to their delicate skin.
