These certificates are signed by an intermediate certificate authority that comes from a root certificate authority. This is the same trust model that secures online banking, medical systems, and other critical infrastructure.

That certificate is not just for the Camera and Monitor. Harbor’s entire system is built on mTLS. Our backend services, mobile apps, user accounts, and every API call must present an mTLS certificate. If something does not have the right certificate, it cannot connect.

Why This Is Different from Normal End-to-End Encryption

Many systems in the baby monitor market claim end-to-end encryption to reassure parents about security. In most cases, this means devices exchange passwords or keys to decrypt a video stream. While Harbor has that as well, and it can keep outsiders from viewing the stream, it still leaves room for security risks, like:

  1. Man-in-the-Middle (MITM/Spoofing) Attacks – Connecting a fake server or device to the stream.

  2. Replay Attacks – Replaying a valid connection to trick the system.

  3. Credential Stuffing/Device Impersonation – Using stolen credentials to impersonate a device or app.
